A dagger is a very versatile "dagger-shaped" brush, allowing for wide variation in stroke width, depending on how much pressure is applied. Traditionally, it's been used for pin-striping and hand-lettering techniques.

A mop brush is ideal for broad washes of watercolour, soaking up and holding a much larger amount of water than other brush shapes. Brushmarks are generally soft and rounded. As well as washes, mops can be used for quick, smooth blending.

A wash brush, also called an oval or sky brush, is similar to a mop in its soft, rounded strokes. As it is slightly flatter than a mop, a wash brush can offer more controlled strokes with a somewhat more defined edge.
